Staithes
Walking
Staithes a great place for walking and exploring. Take the coastal pathways to the nearby Boulby Cliffs, or visit the northern headland of Cowbar Nab with its tiny hamlet snaking down the rock side. Part of the Cleveland Way runs between Staithes and Skinningrove.
Cod and Lobster Inn
A long-established favourite of the village and last defence from the ravages of the North Sea the pub has felt the wrath of the waves on at least three occasions. The last in the great storm of 1953 when the front was washed away and the fishermen looked on in sorrow as the precious bottles of brew bobbed about on the retreating foam.
Locals will tell you that, until very recently, one had to wait for a retreating wave before making a dash into or out of the bar to avoid getting your feet wet! As the sign says: “In rough weather please use the other door”!
So – spend some leisurely time feasting on a spectacular view or take refuge for lunch on a blustery winter’s day, cosy up to the blazing fire and watch the bobbing boats through the rain-lashed windows, or join us for an evening meal and perhaps be lucky to catch a full moon casting a spectacular blue light over the bay.
Captain Cook Inn
The Captain Cook Inn sits in the top of the beautiful village of Staithes, serving pub food and real ales.

Staithes Gallery
Staithes is a picturesque village on the North Yorkshire coast. Once an important fishing port, it has also always been a magnet for artists. Young British impressionists, including the young Laura Knight, flocked here in the early 20th century to form the Staithes Group. in the 1950s Lilian Colbourn made it her home. Later Eric Taylor, Fred Williams and Len Tabner were all inspired by the huddled cottages, lofty cliffs and moody seas and skies of Staithes.
Today Staithes continues to inspire talented artists and Staithes Gallery provides a beautiful showcase right in the heart of the old village for the immense wealth and variety of their work. An absolute must for lovers of art and of the region’s landscapes and coastal views.
Staithes Beach
The sheltered harbour at staithes has a small beach and lots of rock pools to explore when the tide goes out. The fossil hunting is known to be especially good after a storm – this area is known as the Dinosaur Coast and there are special guided walks in the area, great for child friendly exploration days!
The beach at Runswick is a three mile cliff top walk from the bay – a great way to see some of the wildlife.
